Sam Bankman-Fried Sentenced to 25 Years in Jail; Parents Heartbroken

The so-called crypto king Sam Bankman-Fried was finally sentenced to jail time after months of speculation. Founder of the now-defunct FTX, he was sentenced to jail time for defrauding investors and customers. Judge Lewis Caplan said that Bankman-Fried poses a serious risk to do something even worse in the future, and that—along with the evidence—was the reason for such a sentence.

It has to be said that the 25 years in jail were not taken lightly. Some experts believe that justice has been served, others believe that it’s simply too short of a sentence. His parents were heartbroken and announced that they’ll never stop fighting for their son. However, the fact remains that Bankman-Fried used FTX to defraud thousands of people, and many of them will never see a penny of their savings.

A Prominent White-Collar Fraud Case

The case against Sam Bankman-Fried started in November 2022 when it was announced that FTX is going bankrupt. It was a stunning fall for the self-proclaimed crypto king, who refused to admit that he defrauded his customers. A year later, a US jury found him guilty of stealing billions in customer money from the exchange ahead of the collapse. He used that money to fund his luxury lifestyle. Bankman-Fried bought expensive cars and property, and wanted to use that money to become a hugely influential political figure.

A separate bankruptcy case is developing a plan on returning the money to their rightful owners. However, it’s pretty clear that some of them will be left out. Many believe that the money will never be fully recovered. Bankman-Fried’s defense has argued that the recovery of significant funds warrants a lighter sentence.

However, some of his former clients, like British investor Sunil Kavuri, believes Sam Bankman-Fried should be shown no remorse. He said in an interview that he showed no remorse when he stole the money, so why should anyone show remorse to him? He may have a point. Kavuri invested over $2 million at FTX, and doesn’t believe he’ll get a return.

How Long Will He Serve?

According to legal experts, Bankman-Fried may serve as little as 12.5 years in jail. That’s half of his sentence. Prosecutors have asked for 40-50 years, but in the end, the prison time was cut down to 25. His legal team was not satisfied with the sentence, calling it a ‘medieval form of punishment’. They’ve asked for up to 5 years of jail time, which was instantly blown off.

Bankman-Fried’s parents have released a statement right after the sentencing. They announced they will continue the fight until their son is free. However, with stacking evidence against him, his former clients hope he never gets out of jail.
