Bitcoin Exchanges and High Fees
Chris Grand |As soon as they were approved recently, Bitcoin exchange-traded funds became a big hit. There are several available at the moment with many more to come.
Grayscale’s Bitcoin ETF was the first on the US market. While it has its fans, many have cited the high fees as an obstacle. According to chief Michael Sonnenshein, that’s been done on purpose.
He believes that the GBTC fees will start dropping as soon as ETFs ‘start to mature’. There’s no specific timeframe when this might happen, but Sonnenshein believes the market will consolidate soon. It will still be years before ETFs mature, so the high GBTC fees will unfortunately continue for a while.

Highest Management Fees
GBTC was first launched in 2015. It converted to an ETF in January after Grayscale won a lawsuit against the SEC. Out of all the current Bitcoin ETFs, Grayscale’s high the highest management fees. Those go around 1.5% annually, which is about 5 times higher than the alternatives. That hasn’t stopped investors from pouring BTC into it. GBTC has the highest outflows from all the competitors since its conversion.
In an April 10 interview, Sonnenshein admitted that markets have tended to be very excitable when commodities such as Bitcoin make their debut on ETFs. He believes we’re in that Bitcoin phase right now – a very early one.
Over time, these markets will start to mature while the market consolidates overall. Typically, new products such as Bitcoin ETFs also find their way to wealth management platforms, which hasn’t happened yet.
In the USA, Bitcoin adoption and growth is still in its early stages. It will take a while before these things even start to mature. According to Grayscale’s chief, the conversion allowed GBTC to emerge as a risk transference tool for Bitcoin investors.
While the fees are high, GBTC has positioned itself as a market leader, and investors are paying premium price for it. But, with increased adoption across the USA, the fees will start dropping, making it even more accessible to everyone.
